Out Doors?? Maybe Not

Have you ever been camping?

Would you call it camping if we do it within the school compound?

I was part of the Girl Guides till middle school. As a part of the badging we were required to camp outdoors. However, for safety of the children it was decided that we would camp in tents in the school ground. I think more than the safety many of us were not okay with the lets say “outdoor toilet” situation.

Despite the adulterated camping experience, all of us were super excited. We made food using gas stoves that we carried, made a camp fire and had… let’s call them charred marshmallows. We sang songs , danced and shared scary stories.

We set up our tents which proved to be more frustrating than expected with the winds dragging us along with the tent. Finally, we had people sit inside the tent to finish the pitching.

It is definitely worse in the open, but right about past 2 am we all felt like we would freeze to death. That of course, made us huddle to together and when the morning came one would literally call us a “pile”.

The most hilarious part of the whole experience, was walking all the way to the school building to use the toilet at night. Nobody wanted to go alone so we all were using the “mind over matter” mantra. Thankfully, someone spoke in the darkness of the tent saying “Anyone? Washroom?” instantly 5 of us switched on our torches.

We reached the main school building with jittery teeth. While we were in the washroom thought we kept hearing closing classroom doors and people whispering. Of course, there was that one person in the group who seemed to know about the eerie history of the school being on a burial ground. Then all of a sudden we hear a lot of what I now know is a “Flapping” noise.

But unlike most people who take flight when there is danger, I stood perfectly still when the rest of my group ran down the hallway screaming. Funny when I am really scared, my screams seems to be muffled. Probably because my mouth just does not want to open to let the scream out. Anyways, when I finally figured out the noise it turned out to be a pigeon stuck in the exhaust.

My group did return with a teacher to retrieve me from the dangerous situation they had abandoned me in. But the walk back to the tents was just continuous bouts of laughter.

So going back to the prompt, there was camp fire, tents and half cooked food. And whether it was camping or not I leave it for you to decide.

Chemistry

Daily writing prompt
What was your favorite subject in school?

I have strayed far away from a career in my favorite subject – chemistry.

There was a time when you could wake me up in the middle of the night and I would be able to draw complex compound structures without missing a second.

I was fascinated by how the different chemicals reacted with each other and resulted in a whole different type of chemical at the end. The experiments were just amazing!

I loved the different colors and reactions of the experiments. Though the smells from the experiments were not very… pleasant… it never deterred me from the beakers and test tubes of the chemistry lab.

Useful Skills

Growing up, I always try to contemplate the purpose of all the subjects we had in school. I ended up concluding that there was no real purpose.

However, each class did teach me something. Languages taught me how to communicate, Sciences taught me how things work, Maths taught me how to… well… add up things. I could go on about it.

However, leaving the typical subject we learn in the classroom. There was something called skills classes that we were taught. In that class, we were taught how to how to attend/take interviews, give presentations, dress up formally, dinner etiquettes and believe or not make up!

At the time it was taught I found it to be boring, but now that I am actually working, It really makes me realize how small things can make a huge impact!

In their Own Way

When I think of a teacher who has influenced me, more than one of them that come to my mind. I think each of them has influenced a different aspect of my life.

My English teacher, was so appreciative of a poem I wrote for her on her birthday. She literally went around the college and showing it off to all the other teachers. Her happiness on something that I felt was so small for the first time made me believe that I was good with words. I always remember her when I sit to write and I always remember how she cherished what I gave her.

My Econometrics teacher, called me aside one day and asked me to not stop studying. She told me that I was capable to get a PHD. I have always been an average student and believed that I was just common, a person who just gets by. When she said that I had such potential, at first I was taken by shock, but then the feeling of warmth filled my heart. It was from then that I stopped limiting myself to what others thought of me.

I could keep listing other instances where my teachers have influenced my life from time to time. And that is why, I believe each teacher in my life has changed me some way of the other.
