Flavors that Stir the Heart

Daily writing prompt
What’s the best local dish you’ve ever eaten while traveling?

Food has always felt complicated to me, almost like my kryptonite. I never thought of myself as someone with a good palate. For the longest time, I believed the purpose of eating was simply to not be hungry, and taste didn’t matter. That mindset made me cautious whenever I traveled — I would search for food I was already comfortable with, rather than risk trying something new and wasting it. It was only recently, when someone asked me how my last meal tasted and all I could say was “not bad,” that I realized how much my attitude toward food reflected something deeper about me.

I’ve started to change that. My first real step was trying Thai food. At the Original Hoy-Ka restaurant, I expected fiery spice, but the waiter recommended gentler dishes: Chicken Satay and Ka Prao with Rice. They turned out to be sweet, comforting, and surprisingly easy for me to enjoy. The portions were large enough to take home, and for once, my taste buds didn’t resist. That experience made me wonder what it would be like to taste these dishes in Thailand itself. Maybe one day, when courage and circumstance align, I’ll add Thailand to my travel list.

Japanese food was another revelation. I tried Miso Soup alongside a rice bowl with crispy seaweed, egg, and sesame-coated chicken. I later learned it might have been Oyakodon or Katsudon. The flavors were explosive, layered, and overwhelming in the best way. Japanese food feels wholesome, like it carries a sense of home even when eaten alone. It evokes warmth, belonging, and joy — emotions I didn’t expect to find in a meal.

I tried a Philly Cheesesteak in Philadelphia. Rich, hearty, and indulgent, it felt like comfort food in its truest form. But it raised a question for me: does eating a dish from another region within the same country count as “traveling through cuisine”? I think it does. Just as Indian food varies different regions American food shifts from Philly cheesesteaks to Tex-Mex. Regional cuisines are worlds within worlds, each worth exploring.

Food is no longer just about filling my stomach. It’s becoming a journey — one that mirrors travel, culture, and even emotion. Cooking these dishes myself may not capture their authenticity, but it allows me to participate in the story of flavors. I’m learning to accept and appreciate tastes from around the world, one dish at a time. And maybe, through this journey, I’ll discover not just new cuisines, but new parts of myself.

Scenic Wonders in my Dreams

What are your top 10 travel destinations?

I am not very keen on traveling. There are a few reasons for this. The first is that I am geographically illiterate. I do not know much about places, and I do not understand directions. I once took an hour to reach a destination only eight minutes away. Not exaggerating — it is a true story. The even more embarrassing part is that I had maps open on my phone the entire time. You would think I would make one wrong turn, realize my mistake, and correct it. But no, I kept ending up at the same starting point after taking multiple wrong turns.

The next thing that deters me is that I am not a calm traveler. My mind keeps inventing scenarios of losing important things, or even losing myself in a place where I do not know anybody. That slowly develops into an abnormal fear.

But setting aside these irrational fears, I do have a list of places I would love to travel. Ironically, most of them are places where you need to walk a lot.

Japan has quickly risen to the top. The stationery industry there is revolutionary, and as a stationery enthusiast it feels like a dream. I have also become a big fan of the anime Demon Slayer. Many gardens in Japan have been drawn into the manga, and they look serene and beautiful. The Wisteria gardens and cherry blossoms especially call to me. I want to see them with my own eyes — the breeze, the sunlight streaming through the trees. It feels magical.

Santorini attracted me mostly because of the images I see online. Unlike Japan, I do not know much about this place, so I would want to research more before deciding what to visit. The architecture in the pictures is what drew me in. I imagine taking photographs and later sketching them into my art book.

Paris may be cliché, but it belongs on the list. The architecture, the food, the ambience — all of it is enough to attract me. Disney World adds its own magic, and I would love to visit all the Disney attractions around the world. Tokyo Disney is also on my list. Beyond that, Paris seems to have beautiful museums where you can sit alone and admire art in silence. That is something I would treasure.

So for now, these three destinations are the ones I am sure of. My list may change, and I may never be a seasoned traveler, but these places live in my imagination. They remind me that travel is not only about movement — sometimes it is about longing, about the beauty we carry within us even if we never set foot there.

One that I can Drive

What is your all time favorite automobile?

For many people, cars are a passion. They know about the engine, latest features, and know exactly why a car would be good for them. For me though, a car is simply a mode of transport. I do not have a personal preference as far as the car is concerned, but the places it can take me is something that I would focus on.

I don’t need a flashy car, what matters most is good mileage. If it gets me from point A to point B without breaking down or giving me any grief I am good.

I prefer cars where I can see clearly over the dashboard and reach the pedals easily. While I used to enjoy the control of a manual stick, the traffic en route to work have made me lean toward the convenience of an automatic instead.

For me, the real thrill isn’t in the car itself but in the journeys in it. If there’s one feature that adds extra joy, it’s a good stereo system.

At the end of the day, I would want a car to use rather than a car to own.

Every city my wallet could afford

What cities do you want to visit?

I am not a person who travels much. I think the commotion of popular tourist spots makes me feel anxious. But if I could get over this fear I would want to travel to every city in the world.

There are so many beautiful places around the world that seem so mesmerizing in the pictures and videos.

There are the popular cities like Paris, London, Tokyo, Seoul, Rome in my list. But if there is one that tops my list: Santorini. I do not know if I if the pictures really show the true picture, but as much as I have seen, its simply beautiful!

If you were to ask what is that I specifically want to visit. I have zero information. Its the calmness that the pictures portray that drag me to that place. I feel that I will get my “Breath of Fresh Air”. One day soon I hope to visit. It may not be the first city that I get to visit. However, I wish to visit it at least once before I am too tired to travel.

Out Doors?? Maybe Not

Have you ever been camping?

Would you call it camping if we do it within the school compound?

I was part of the Girl Guides till middle school. As a part of the badging we were required to camp outdoors. However, for safety of the children it was decided that we would camp in tents in the school ground. I think more than the safety many of us were not okay with the lets say “outdoor toilet” situation.

Despite the adulterated camping experience, all of us were super excited. We made food using gas stoves that we carried, made a camp fire and had… let’s call them charred marshmallows. We sang songs , danced and shared scary stories.

We set up our tents which proved to be more frustrating than expected with the winds dragging us along with the tent. Finally, we had people sit inside the tent to finish the pitching.

It is definitely worse in the open, but right about past 2 am we all felt like we would freeze to death. That of course, made us huddle to together and when the morning came one would literally call us a “pile”.

The most hilarious part of the whole experience, was walking all the way to the school building to use the toilet at night. Nobody wanted to go alone so we all were using the “mind over matter” mantra. Thankfully, someone spoke in the darkness of the tent saying “Anyone? Washroom?” instantly 5 of us switched on our torches.

We reached the main school building with jittery teeth. While we were in the washroom thought we kept hearing closing classroom doors and people whispering. Of course, there was that one person in the group who seemed to know about the eerie history of the school being on a burial ground. Then all of a sudden we hear a lot of what I now know is a “Flapping” noise.

But unlike most people who take flight when there is danger, I stood perfectly still when the rest of my group ran down the hallway screaming. Funny when I am really scared, my screams seems to be muffled. Probably because my mouth just does not want to open to let the scream out. Anyways, when I finally figured out the noise it turned out to be a pigeon stuck in the exhaust.

My group did return with a teacher to retrieve me from the dangerous situation they had abandoned me in. But the walk back to the tents was just continuous bouts of laughter.

So going back to the prompt, there was camp fire, tents and half cooked food. And whether it was camping or not I leave it for you to decide.

Explorer within Four Walls

If I were to write down the places next to home I still have not visited it would end up being a very long list. I have lived with very protective parents and going alone somewhere was never a possibility. Added to that, I an introvert and quite lazy I would prefer to explore places within the confines of my room.

On a general note, I prefer to visit places where I can just sit and breathe. I love mostly visiting places when the air is dewy and the sun is hot enough to keep me warm but not that it makes me sweat. I appreciate visiting a place when I can hear the sounds of nature over the noise of the busy city. I love those moments when the mind slows down without having the constant thoughts in my head that people are judging me.

Probably one of the reasons why I chose to get lost in the worlds that books bring me. Just a comfortable chair and good light is all I need to enjoy exploration. But maybe someday soon I will choose to venture out to the real world and explore the wonders it holds.
